Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. The city has approximately 70,000 people.  It is the fourth largest city in the state behind Baltimore, Rockville, and Frederick. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington DC , and is considered a suburb and a primary city within the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gaithersburg was incorporated in 1878.

Gaithersburg is urbanistically diverse.  It encompasses a historic Old Town, as well as a new urbanist community called Kentlands.  The city also has high-rise/low-rise apartments, a shopping mall, and suburban subdivisions.

Education and Economics

Gaithersburg is home to more than 3,000 businesses in the heart of the Washington-Baltimore region. It finds itself in the middle of the fourth largest retail market in the U.S..  It is central to the New England-Atlanta Corridor. The city is an internationally recognized center of biotechnology.  Many research facilities and regulatory agencies including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the NIH, and the FDA.

Gaithersburg has proximity to Washington, DC.  Also it is close to major global industries. The City plays host to many international and domestic visitors. The city boasts one of the highest educated labor pools in the country. In fact, Maryland ranks fourth in percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree and second in the percentage with a graduate or professional degree. The City is within an hour’s drive of many colleges and universities.  And several are located just beyond its borders.
